They represent 2 percent of the population aged 55 and over. Thirty percent of these residents are 90 years or over, and three-quarters are female. The number of people living in nursing and care homes has been falling for years.

Only 4.5 percent (about 1.5 million) of older adults live in nursing homes and 2 percent (1 million) in assisted living facilities. The majority of older adults (93.5 percent, or 33.4 million) live in the community.
Across the U.S., there are around 1.4 million people living in nursing homes. Of those: 7.8% are 95 years old or older. 33.8% are 85-94 years old.
Currently there are over 400 private and voluntary nursing homes in Ireland, who cater to over 20,000 people.
Australia provides institutional long term care for almost 20% of the population aged ≥ 80 years, and 6% of those aged ≥ 65 years. This places Australia as the nation with the highest proportion of older people living in institutional care compared with 11 other nations (Box).
Almost half of all people who live in nursing homes are 85 years or older. Relatively few residents are younger than 65 years of age.
69 percent In 1990, women made up a greater share of older adults living alone (79 percent). But since then, the percentage of older women living alone has decreased from 38 percent to 32 percent, while the percentage of older men living alone has risen slightly from 15 percent to 18 percent.
First of all, you should know that on any given day in the U.S., 1 out of 4 people over the age of 65 are in a nursing home, temporarily. The chances of you, your parent or spouse spending some time in a nursing home at some point in your life is also 25%. Pretty high right?
A General overview At global level, the share of 80+ people rose from 0.6% in 1950 (15 million) to around 1.6% (110 million) in 2011, and it is expected to reach 4% (400 million) by 2050.
In 2016, 5.3 million ( 11 percent of) adults age 65 and over lived in another person’s house- hold—3.4 million in the homes of their children and 1.1 million in the homes of their parents, siblings, or other relatives.

Population of Ireland by age group in 2019 In 2019 there were approximately 696 thousand people who were aged 65 or over in the Republic of Ireland, compared with 1.2 million 45 to 64 year old’s, almost 1.4 million 25 to 44 year old’s, and 618 thousand 15 to 24 year old’s.
German-based healthcare investor IMMAC Group has acquired two nursing homes in Ireland, building its presence in the Irish market. The company said it had bought St Gabriel’s Nursing Home in Raheny, Dublin, and Beechpark Nursing Home in Kildare.
5% of older adults (aged 65+) live in a nursing home. Of these, about 50%of nursing home residents are 85 years old or older, 35% are between the ages of 75 and 84, and 15% are between 65 and 74 years of age. Most nursing home residents are admitted with more than one condition, most with three or more conditions.
At 30 June 2020, a total of 335,889 people were using residential aged care (permanent or respite, 189,954), home care (142,436) or transition care (3,499) in Australia.
