Community dwelling elderly people are defined by their age (≥60 years of age) and by living independently. This group can suffer from a large variety of health care problems; from just getting older (not diseases specific) to suffering from multiple pathologies.
Old people who live in the community ( = the local community ) on their own ( = without anybody’s help) in their own private homes, as opposed to those (who are) taken care of in nursing homes.
Social participation included six types of activities: hobby, friendship, clubs for the elderly, volunteer activities, community events and communication with family members and friends.
Community Engagement Models
There are senior center programs that can help an elder participate in a variety of social activities. These programs might include such things as book clubs, gardening, games, exercise programs, crafts, and cooking. A lot of fun games involve physical activity.

Building community and social capacity – helping the community to share knowledge, skills and ideas. Community resilience – helping the community to support itself. Prevention – a focus on early access to services or support, engagement in design, cross-sector collaboration and partnerships.
The three types of communities are rural, urban, and suburban.
Find a senior exercise program in the area. Many park districts and senior centers offer exercise groups tailored to older adults. Find one and encourage your aging parents to attend, and even offer to pay for the first month. These classes are not only physical activity, but they also foster friendships.
