When someone is in an advanced stage of life that is well past middle age, they might be referred to as “ elderly .” This term often carries negative connotations and might suggest that someone is frail or in poor health.
Each state receives OAA funds according to a formula based on the state’s share of the U.S. population age 60 and older. States are required to provide a non- federal match. The required match is 25 percent for family caregiver support and 15 percent for supportive services, preventive health, and meals.
The World Health Organisation believes that most developed world countries characterise old age starting at 60 years and above . However, this definition isn’t adaptable to a place like Africa, where the more traditional definition of an elder, or elderly person, starts between 50 to 65 years of age.
Generally, someone over the age of 65 might be considered an older person. However, it is not easy to apply a strict definition because people can biologically age at different rates so, for example, someone aged 75 may be healthier than someone aged 60.

And elders is a term embraced by those that see it as a sign of respect. Over- 55 , over-65, and of course, the ever-popular baby boomers (for the younger old people) are phrases that are widely accepted. Unless you’re referring to a frail 99- year-old , please, oh please, do not use elderly !
The Older Americans Act ( OAA ) funds critical services that keep older adults healthy and independent—services like meals, job training, senior centers, health promotion, benefits enrollment, caregiver support, transportation, and more.
Congress provides funding for services under the Older Americans Act for distribution through the Administration on Aging . It is the responsibility of the AoA to distribute this money to state aging units and tribal organizations in the form of grants for seven specific service categories authorized under the act.

Common conditions in older age include hearing loss, cataracts and refractive errors, back and neck pain and osteoarthritis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes, depression, and dementia. Furthermore, as people age , they are more likely to experience several conditions at the same time.
